Frequently Asked Questions

What is the American Chiropractic Association Sports Council (ACASC)?

The ACA Sports Council was founded in 1972 by Leonard Schroeder, the first president of the organization, and four other doctors of chiropractic (DCs). The ACA Sports Council was established to help provide advanced programs of learning related to injuries that occur during athletic events, training, competition, and more. Olympic athletes began working with sports chiropractors in 1976. Four years later, the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) Division of Sports Medicine officially appointed its first sports chiropractor.

For more than 40 years, the ACA Sports Council has organized an annual symposium along with its general membership meeting. This event serves as a great opportunity to meet members from around the world and offers many educational sessions as well as the opportunity to earn continuing education units.

Today the ACA Sports Council has well-established contacts at the USOC, International Olympic Committee, World Olympians Association, and other global sports organizations.

What is the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), and how is the ACASC affiliated?

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) is the largest professional chiropractic organization in the United States. ACA attracts the most principled and accomplished chiropractors, who understand that it takes more to be called an ACA chiropractor.

We are leading our profession in the most constructive and far-reaching ways — by working hand in hand with other health care professionals, by lobbying for pro-chiropractic legislation and policies, by supporting meaningful research and by using that research to inform our treatment practices.

We also provide professional and educational opportunities for all our members and are committed to being a positive and unifying force for the practice of modern chiropractic.

The ACASC is a specialty council of the ACA. Thus, all individuals who desire to be an ACASC member must be members of the ACA.

What is the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians (ACBSP)?

The ACBSP™ is the governing board for the Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician® (CCSP®) and Diplomate American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians® (DACBSP®) certifications. Various accredited chiropractic colleges offer the curricula and training leading to qualification for taking the certification exams. The ACBSP™ governs the administration of the examinations and certifications. These certifications are designed for chiropractic doctors who want to specialize in chiropractic sports medicine. In addition, the ACBSP™ offers continuing education and research seminars to facilitate the dissemination of the latest scientific knowledge, treatment trends, and best practices for patient care.

What is the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic (FICS)?

FICS is a global sports chiropractic organization that provides equitable access to sports chiropractic care to all athletes. As a professional organization, we provide education, mentoring, networking, research, and participation at regional, national and international sporting events. The International Certificate in Sports Chiropractic (ICSC) program offers an individual chiropractor the credentials required to work at FICS events worldwide. It is the minimum qualification required to be part of a FICS chiropractic delegation at regional sporting events, and international events such as The World Games or Olympics.
